How often should I change my glasses?
There is no fixed schedule. As a general guide, get your eyes tested every one to two years, and replace your glasses when your prescription has changed or when the lenses or frame are worn out. Let the condition of your glasses and how you see guide you.
What are the signs it may be time?
Look out for these:
- Headaches or tired eyes after reading or screen work that you did not have before
- Squinting to see the board, a menu or road signs
- Holding things further or closer than usual
- Scratched or cloudy lenses that blur your view or make glare worse at night
- A bent or loose frame that sits crooked or keeps sliding down
- Glasses older than a couple of years with no recent eye test
None of these prove anything on their own. They are reasons to book a free eye test and check.
How long do lens coatings last?
Lens coatings, such as anti-glare or scratch-resistant layers, wear gradually. How fast depends on how you treat them:
- Wipe lenses with a soft microfibre cloth, not your shirt or a dry tissue
- Rinse dust off with water first
- Do not leave glasses in a hot car or on a dashboard in summer, since heat can damage coatings
- Keep them in a case, and not loose in a bag
With good care, a coating can last for years. Without care, scratches and smudges appear sooner. Once a coating is damaged, it cannot be repaired, and the lens usually needs replacing.
How long do frames last?
Frames wear with daily use. Screws loosen, nose pads yellow or harden and arms can bend out of shape. Many of these issues can be fixed with a quick adjustment or a small part, so a frame does not always need replacing. If the frame is cracked, loose even after tightening or no longer holds your lenses securely, it is time for a new one.
What can I do before buying new glasses?
- Get a free eye test to see if your prescription has changed
- Ask for an adjustment. A small tweak often fixes sliding or pinching
- Check the lenses for scratches in bright light
At Optimax Vision, after-sale service is free, and there is a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects (T&C apply). Bring your glasses in anytime for tightening and cleaning.
What if my vision seems the same?
Then you may not need new glasses at all. Eye tests are still worth doing every one to two years, because changes can be gradual and easy to miss.
Can I keep a spare pair?
A second pair is handy if one breaks, but wearing old, outdated glasses as your main pair is not a good idea. Keep any spare pair up to date as well.
If you notice sudden changes in vision, eye pain, redness or flashes of light, see an eye doctor without waiting.
